Bwindi Impenetrable National Park lies in southwestern Uganda on the edge of the Western Rift Valley. It has mist-covered hillsides which are enclosed by one of Uganda’s oldest and most biologically diverse rainforests, which dates back over 25,000 years. It is one of the largest natural forests in East Africa with both montane and lowland forests, and contains almost 400 species of plants, about 320 mountain gorillas,120 mammals, 350 recorded species of birds, including several primate species such as baboons and chimpanzees, as well as elephants and antelopes. There are hosted in this forest, including 23 Albertine Rift endemics.
Bwindi habituates about half of the world’s population of mountain gorillas with three families habituated at Buhoma, Mubare, Habinyanja and Rushegura – 8 permits are available per day for tracking each of these gorilla families. One family is habituated at Nkuringo and also 8 permits are available per day for tracking. Tracking commences every morning at 08:00 hours with briefing of the tourists by the guides at the park headquarters.
